You’re not alone. We’re all rapidly shedding friends on Facebook at the moment. It’s that time of year when all your buddies are off on yachts or running with bulls or sipping cocktails on impossibly beautiful beaches.
And with the rain pouring down outside and winter well and truly in force around Australia it’s easy to get some serious winter blues. But at Naked Ambition we think you are looking at it entirely the wrong way. In fact, we think that it is actually a GOOD thing that you are not in Europe.
A new financial year is a chance for a new beginning.
If you work for an Australian corporate, chances are July 1 means the start of a new beginning for you - so take the time to set your personal, professional and community goals for the year. We are big on bringing your whole self to your work, your home and the community in which you live so think of your goals in all these different contexts.
You can get a jump start on your personal development New year also means that budgets are renewed so this is a great time to book in that course, personal development opportunity, trip to the Sydney office or training that you’ve been meaning to speak to your manager about. Get in early while the budget’s big! (well, sort of - thanks Tony Abbott)
It’s a chance to renew your focus on your health/well-being When you’re arriving at and leaving from work while it’s still dark, it’s easy to let your health fall by the way side and get into the eat, sleep, work, repeat routine. Depressing. And bad for you in every way. Before everyone returns from Europe, see if you can work a new exercise routine, fitness regime or meditation technique into your schedule and stick to it (at least until they get back). Is there a buddy at work you can recruit to be part of it? Or a group that you can get together with at lunch time for a boxing session? Bonding over a fitness goal is also a great way to connect with senior people you may not otherwise come in contact with or those working in unrelated areas of your company.
You’ll make some good connections and have some positive results for your health too (which also helps with managing stress!) Finally, look on the bright side if you’re here in Aus while all your friends are in Europe. You won’t have to face sleezy speedos, Burlusconi, 18 Euro cocktails, or 30 hour flights with 4 stops and screaming babies in the next few weeks. It’s a great chance to give your career a boost and develop some positive habits.
