Today is officially the half way point of 2014. Making it the ultimate hump day. Six months into the year gives us a good chance to reflect on what we have done and how far we have come. Or maybe not. Because what if you aren’t where you wanted to be halfway through the year?
What if you are freaking because 2014 feels like it slipping through your fingers? Well, the way we see it there are two options…
You can go around saying to everyone you see over the next couple of weeks “Can you believe how fast this year is going? I mean, every year gets quicker, but this year – wow.” Which, along with answering ‘Too short’ when someone asks how your weekend was, saying ‘TGI Friday’ without a sense of irony and using the word ‘Mondayitis’ – is the sort of chat that can get people (rightfully) fired.
Your other option, if you aren’t quite where you want to be at this half yearly milestone, is to reflect and re-visit. Reflect on what you have done. On all of your achievements to date, even the small wins. Because chances are, you have been laying the foundations, sowing the seeds you will reap as the year rolls on. And this groundwork will pay off. Even if you can’t see it yet.
It’s a bit like when you go to sleep and your eyebrows look good and the next day they are two caterpillars on your face. Things are going on behind the scenes. Once you pass this period of reflection and have sufficiently celebrated your progress – take some time to revisit your goals. Whether these are goals you have set yourself or as part of your performance review, revisiting these will help you get clear on what you really want for the next six months and beyond.
And this is where you have to get a bit hard on yourself.
Once you have clearly visualised what you want for the rest of the year – go for it. Not every second day. Not on the weekends. Not when you have time. Cos if you want to make sure you aren’t wondering in December whether you are exactly where you need be, then starting this very Hump Day, get out there and freakin’ make that dream happen!
